pattern review friday - heidi & finn chevron dress

I recently had the opportunity to test the Heidi & Finn Chevron Dress pattern.  The 12 months - 5T option can be found here and the size 6 - 12 option here.  I have made Heidi & Finn patterns in the past (here and here) and I have generally found them to be good patterns.  This is not just a good pattern, but a Great (imagine a Tony the Tiger "It's GR-R-REAT!" inserted here) pattern!

I made a size seven for Gracie, who wears a 7 slim in most ready-to-wear clothing.  I found the pattern to be quite slim fitting which I love!  I have to adjust most patterns to make them fit well, but this one was perfect as is.  The only change I made was to make the pink chevron on the skirt 1" taller than the pattern called for, since this was the only spot of color on the bottom of the dress.  There's really not too much more I can say about the dress.  The pattern and directions were both easy to follow, and the dress was easy to sew.  Overall, I enjoyed making it and will gladly use the pattern again!  If you are interested, I posted this tutorial last week on how to modify the pattern to create a chevron bodice.

Just a tip, if you have never sewn with knits before (especially thin knits like these) I would suggest using spray starch on your fabric to help keep it from stretching too much as you sew.  This helps prevent puckering along the seams.

I just love this next picture.  It probably captures Gracie's personality better than most pictures I take. She did not want her picture taken on this particular day because she wanted to go play with her best friend instead.  She was mad at me for making her take pictures at all, but true to who she is, she couldn't stay mad for long :)  This picture was taken right as she let out the giggles she had been trying so hard to hold in as protest.
